Matchday 22, the season finale.

4–6 minutes

There’s so much action from matchday 22,

The title race has come down to the final day. The battle for first and second places is still ongoing, and the competition for fourth and fifth place is also up in the air. It is truly a day for to break out the radios and multiple screens.

It’s the conclusion of the season after all, so here’s a season finale matchday round-up.

Champions of England, 5 times in a row.

Chelsea 6 – 0 Manchester United.

Chelsea came into this fixture knowing just how tight the top of the table is and they achieved the dream of winning five back-to-back WSL titles.

Chelsea took the early lead in the 2nd minute as Guro Reiten’s cross found Mayra Ramirez, putting them ahead.

Johanna Ryyting Kaneryd added a second goal as Mary Earps, the goalkeeper, attempted to defend but missed the ball.

Sjoeke Nuske scored the third goal, and Ramirez added another before the break.

Despite being 4-0 up at halftime, Chelsea continued to perform well.

Earps found herself in a tricky place after the break managed to save the first attempt on goal but couldn’t stop the second, allowing Leopolz to poke home the fifth of the day.

Fran Kirby, came on as as super substitute, scored Chelsea’s sixth goal in what is her last appearance in sapphire and gold.

For Manchester United, the defensive performance was disappointing, giving them much to consider as they head into the pre-season.

Denied the title on goal difference.

Aston Villa 1 – 2 Manchester City.

As Chelsea went head-to-head with Man United while Aston Villa played Manchester City in the other match that could determine the outcome of the title race.

Despite marking the scoresheet twice and winning at Villa Park, Manchester City was pipped to the post.

Mary Fowler put City in front when they still had a chance, but the mood needed to be lifted as news spread of Chelsea battering the Red Devils. The absence of top scorer Bunny Shaw was felt, and the team is not getting the results they had hoped for, even though they are putting in the effort.

They created more chances than Chelsea had but lacked a clinical edge.

Anna Leat made some crucial saves, and Lauren Hemp scored a goal in the final moments, but it wasn’t enough to secure the title thanks to Chelsea increasing the goal difference.

So long Arsenal.

Arsenal 5 – 0 Brighton & Hove Albion.

Arsenal played Brighton in their final game after confirming they would be playing Champions League next season.

Beth Mead and Emily Fox combined to set up Alessia Russo, who scored 17 minutes into the game, giving Arsenal the lead.

Russo scored again before being substituted for Vivianne Meidema.

Vivianne Meidema took to social media just days before this fixture to announce she would not be who also found the back of the net with her first touch of the game.

Carabali scored an own goal, and Maanum added another goal, bringing the final score to 5-0 in favour of Arsenal.

The victory, along with the clean sheet, allowed for sweet goodbyes to be said to Viv Miedema and goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo who announced they’d be leaving the club after the game. Arsenal now have the task during the pre-season period will be to find adequate replacements for these players.

The end of a successful season for Liverpool.

Leicester 0 – 4 Liverpool.

Liverpool has been unbeaten in their last 4 away games.

Sophie Roman Haug scored the opener, followed by Lianne Kiernan’s hattrick, with no reply from the Foxes.

This allowed Liverpool to complete their first double over Leicester in what has been a good year for Liverpool.

Spurs bounce back against West Ham.

Tottenham Hotspur 3 – West Ham 1.

A season to forget for West Ham United as they finished the season in 11th place and haved done just enough to avoid relegation.

Spurs bounce back from their recent defeats and picking up their runners-up medals by keeping possession throughout.

Spurs took the lead through Beth England just 4 minutes in

West Ham thought they had done enough to pick up a point when Riko Ueki equalised in the 50th minute.

But the Spurs proved them wrong when Jessica Naz and Drew Spence scored twice in the dying moments to finish the Spur’s season positively.

Another heavy defeat for Bristol City.

Bristol City 0 – 4 Everton.

Bristol City have taken up the 12th spot on the table all season having only picked up one victory and three draws the lowest of any team.

They met with Everton on thier final day of WSL football in what was a one-sided fixture.

Bristol City began to trail after 16 minutes due to Katja Snoejis’s opener.

The Toffees continued to dominate, with Sara Holmgaard, Emma Bissell, and Martina Piemonte all scoring goals who claim a final victory on the road.

So for the last time, What does the table look like ?

Manchester City and Chelsea end the season joint on points separated by a 7-goal difference.

The table confirms that Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal will be playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Liverpool finished fourth over Manchester United their highest spot in recent history.

Bristol City’s relegation was confirmed earlier in the season and will be replaced by Crystal Palace who make their first appearance in the WSL.
