Matchday 19 – In review.

4–6 minutes

Another thrilling round of Women’s Super League football has come to a close with matchday 19.

Only a handful of games remain and the competition at the top is heating up.

In case you missed any of the action, here is a quick summary of all the excitement.

Milestones in Manchester.

Manchester City 5 – 0 West Ham.

In their recent fixture, Manchester City achieved a series of milestones. The team have now won an impressive 13 league games in a row and 100 wins under manager Gareth Taylor. Additionally, Bunny Shaw contributed two goals to the tally, reaching her 50th Women’s Super League goal.

The game started with a bang as Leila Ouahabi opened the scoring and secured an early lead within the first 24 seconds of the match. This was just a sign of things to come for West Ham, who left with a massive loss.

Other notable moments included Laura Blindkilde Brown scoring her first goal for the team at the 81-minute mark and Jess Park adding a fifth goal to the scoreboard at the 86-minute mark.

West Ham should have wanted to collect points here to distance themselves from the relegation zone as it is mathematically possible that Bristol City could still stay up while West Ham could go down. However, despite their efforts, West Ham were unable to respond to Manchester City’s dominance. The team hit the woodwork three times but failed to score.

Man City’s win takes them back up to the top spot as they add a turn to the title race.

Rehearsal for the WFA cup final ends in a draw.

Manchester United 2 – 2 Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United managed to level the score in a practice match before the WFA Cup final next month, after conceding an early goal.

United scored first, with a header by Melvine Mallard into an empty net, but it was Maya le Tissier who saved United in stoppage time.

Both teams had their moments in the scrappy game, but Beth England managed to nullify United’s lead, thanks to a shot driven in by Drew Spence. Two minutes later, Spurs turned the game around, by adding a second goal to the scoresheet.

Following the corner, Le Tissier bundled in a shot and the game ended in a draw at Leigh Sports village in what was planned to be an important game.

A good season at the Emirates.

Arsenal 3 – Leicester City 0.

Arsenal had a successful match against Leicester, securing a comfortable win. The victory also ensured their place in the UWCL qualifiers for next season. However, with the distance between 3rd and 4th place being too great, third is the only position they look to finish with in this season.

The Emirates has been a great venue for Arsenal this season, and they just played their final game there. Russo scored on either side of Beth Mead’s goal, giving Arsenal a solid lead. Although the result suggests that Leicester City didn’t test Manuela Zinsberger, they were simply unable to complete a reply. Overall, it was a good performance from Arsenal and a satisfying end to their season at the Emirates.

Despite winning 3-0, the golden moment was when Frida Maanum made her comeback in the 66th minute. She had collapsed in the Continental Cup final last month, and her return was met with a rolling applause from the crowd. It was a heart-warming moment for everyone to see her back on the field and playing again.

Wins for the Merseyside teams.

Brighton 1 – 2 Everton

Bristol City 0 – Liverpool 1.

Bristol’s run with low confidence continues with relegation looking imminent.  The robins faced Liverpool this weekend and bagged yet another loss.

Marie Hobinger sealed the deal for Liverpool with her first-time strike. Matt Beard’s Liverpool side picked up all 3 points on the road and are now tied on points with Manchester United.

Everton also travelled down to Brighton for a game at the Amex stadium.

The toffees took the lead at the hour mark. The lead was short-lived as Brighton’s Tatiana Pinto shot home a rebound just 3 minutes later.

Everton’s lead was later revived thanks to an own goal which left Brighton unable to complete the double over Everton like they planned, and both travelling Merseyside teams picked up 3 points.

So what does the table look like now.

Manchester City’s recent win has helped them reclaim the top spot, sitting three points ahead of Chelsea. However, the gap between the two teams is not too large. If Chelsea wins their game in hand by more than three goals, they will return to the top spot.

Arsenal’s recent victory has secured their third-place position, which guarantees their qualification for the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

Bristol City is currently at 6 points, and it seems that relegation is imminent for them. To avoid relegation, they would need to win all their remaining games. However, this seems unlikely as they face two giants, Manchester City and Chelsea.
